IF KURT Vonnegut JR didn't make you laugh you were already dead. You were already dead or, more likely, the president of the United States, a commander of armed forces, or too rich for your own good. If Kurt Vonnegut JR didn't make you laugh you were one of the people, possibly human, Kurt Vonnegut was writing about. And so on.
Vonnegut made human beings laugh. Mostly they laughed because he was trying to be funny. Sometimes they laughed when he didn't think he was being funny. Sometimes they laughed even when they didn't think he was being funny. Now Vonnegut is dead and no-one is laughing. He would have thought that was funny. And so on.
